Wilson is Medallist at Spring Q-School

RSS

Mark Wilson of Kincardine, ON set himself a goal earlier this week to finish in top spot at the Canadian Tours 2001 McDonalds Spring Qualifying School in Kamloops.
Canadian Tour-Large
On Friday, he made that goal a reality.

Blitzing the Dunes at Kamloops back nine to a 5-under-par 31, Wilson finished the day with a 65 and a five-round total of 15-under-par 345, good enough for a four-shot win over Andy Johnson (Orlando, FL).

Michael Chavez (Santa Barbara, CA) ended in third spot, five strokes back. Canadians Dean Kennedy (Vancouver, BC) and Mark Maue (Kitchener, ON) will also have exempt status for the 2001 Canadian Tour season, as will former U.S. amateur standout Steve Scott, the runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 1996 U.S. Amateur Championship.

After shooting 2-under-par through his opening nine holes Friday, Wilson reeled off five birdies in six holes from the 11th to the 16th.

Im speechless right now. I found my groove on the back nine, every putt I tried just dropped, said Wilson, who also carded a 65 at Rivershore Estates and Golf Links during Mondays opening round. Im feeling very good about my game right now. Hopefully I can carry this out on Tour with me this summer.

Kennedy was likely the feel-good story of the tournament. Having never grabbed an exempt card in nine previous qualifying schools, including last spring when he three-putted his final hole to miss his card by a stroke, the 27-year-old finally got it right this time around.

Faced with a downhill lie 169 yards from the pin on the par-4 final hole Friday, Kennedy nailed a 7-iron with his second shot that landed within three feet of the cup.

Following the shot, he pumped his fist in the air, knowing the long wait was over.

I got to the 10th tee (after shooting 2-over through the front nine Friday), and told myself now was my time, he said. A lot of people, family, friends, strangers, have supported me over the years. This was for me, but it was also for all those people as well.

The Canadian Tour will resume in Victoria with the Shell Payless Open running from June 14-17.
