Dalys manager was supposed to inform tournament officials on Monday that he was going to get some rest and withdraw from the event; instead, Dalys first-round group waited for his arrival Thursday morning.
Campbell, the tournaments sixth alternate, was among those waiting on the 10th tee box at the Palm Course. He got the nod when Daly was disqualified for not making his 8:10 a.m. tee time.
Campbell received a phone call while he was in the parking lot with his caddie around 7:45 a.m. informing him that Daly had not yet registered.
He then hit a few balls in anticipation of playing.
I woke up this morning and really didnt know if I was going to play, kind of a rush morning, Campbell said.
Campbell played alongside Vijay Singh. He shot an even-par 72.
Even pars not a bad score, Campbell said. Its just a pleasant surprise to be (playing) this week.
Campbell was in Shreveport, La., for the Buy.Com Shreveport Open when he got the news Tuesday that he had advanced to first alternate. He then flew to Orlando that night.
Campbell won three times on the Buy.Com Tour this season to earn a promotion to the PGA Tour. Hes the third man to accomplish that feat (Chris Smith, 1997; Heath Slocum, 2001).
Daly started the year ranked 507th in the Official World Golf Ranking and has improved to 52nd. He won the European Tours BMW International in early September, and then finished runner-up a month later at the Linde German Masters.
The 35-year-old, two-time major winner also has a pair of top-10 finishes over his last three starts on the PGA Tour, including a tie for 7th in last weeks Invensys Classic at Las Vegas, where he shot a career-best 62 in the second round.
