Captain Strange Talks Ryder Cup

RSS

Curtis Strange walked into the media center at the Atlanta Athletic Club and talked briefly about this years PGA Championship venue.

He then flashed a wry smile and said: Enough about that. I know what you want to talk about.

Thats when the questions began to fly, and a routine press conference turned into an hour-long inquisition.

Come Monday morning, Strange will announce to the world his two captains selections for Septembers Ryder Cup at The Belfry in Wishaw, England.

Ten players will earn an automatic berth on the team based on their standings on the Ryder Cup points list following the conclusion of the PGA Championship.

The other two members will be up to Captain Strange.

Everyone is still on the list, Strange said in a Wednesday press conference. I honestly can say that because someone you dont think is on the list could win (the PGA Championship.)

I certainly have my gut feelings, yes, dont get me wrong, but it can really change.

Over 30 players are mathematically alive to qualify for the team. Four players ' Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Davis Love III have secured spots on the team, while Mark Calcavecchia, Hal Sutton and Scott Hoch are relatively safe.

Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink and Tom Lehman currently own spots 8-10, respectively.

Ryder Cup points are doubled (from 150 to 300 for the winner) during majors. Whomever finishes 10th this week gets 20 points. There are only 54 points separating 8th and 11th place.

As a five-time Ryder Cupper, Strange has experienced just about every emotion.

Hes qualified for the team. Hes been selected for the team. Hes been denied for the team.

Strange last played as a captains pick in 1995. Lanny Wadkins chose the then 40-year-old to solidify his team at Oak Hill, site of Stranges 1989 U.S. Open triumph.

It proved to be a bust, as Strange finished 0-3 and the U.S. lost the Cup.

But as a first-time captain, Strange is feeling a new kind of pressure.

As a captains pick, I felt pressure to perform, to uphold my end of the bargain, Strange said. But on the golf course, you feel like youre in control because thats what I do for a living.

As a captain, I dont feel theres pressure to perform. Theres pressure to ' theres more responsibility, you know, to lead this team and to have everything perfect for the 12 players that week, and organize and prepare for the entire week.

Come Monday, that 12-man team will be finalized ' at the discretion of Strange.

Of course, that's just the beginning to Strange's executive decisions.

Will Woods and Duval be paired together?

'The issue has been brought up and discussed,' Strange said. 'And they have been reminded that I am the Captain and that I make the final selections on who is playing with who. That's the truth. Write it.'

Will the team get together prior to Ryder Cup week?

'I don't know,' he said. 'Depends on scheduling. I'll be in contact with all of them.'

And most importantly, will the U.S. wear those dog-ugly shirts they wore two years ago.

'Y'all will be happy with what we wear...we will represent everyone back home very nicely.'
