Thirty years ago, he, too, lost his bid to win the calendar Grand Slam at Muirfield and then tied for 13th in the seasons final major at Oakland Hills. The finish proved to be his worst in a span of 33 majors played, dating from the 1970 U.S. Open to the 1978 PGA Championship.
Can we expect the same from Tiger in 2002?
After you win two and then lose by a shot (as Nicklaus did in the 1972 British Open), the PGA was something I had a tough time getting up for, and Tiger will have the same problem, Nicklaus said.
Woods, like Nicklaus before him, won the Masters and U.S. Open in the same season, and then failed to complete the third leg of the Grand Slam at the British Open.
But while Nicklaus lost by one to Lee Trevino at Muirfield, Woods shot a third-round 81 on the same course ' under dreadful conditions ' and finished tied for 28th.
Will Woods suffer a British Open hangover, or retaliatory redemption at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Aug. 15-18?
Woods will try and hone his game the week prior at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. He last played in the event two years ago, when he was fresh off completing the career Grand Slam at the British Open. He went on to win his third straight major at Valhalla.
He also won the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah.
Nicklaus is one of many who thinks it is a good thing that someone ' particularly one as prestigious as Ernie Els ' finally toppled Tiger in a major. Still, the 62-year-old, 18-time professional major champion believes it wont take long before Woods starts another major run.
I think they all still know that Tiger is still the best player and will usually be the player to beat, Nicklaus said.
