Monty Langer Team on Day 1

2004 UBS CupKIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer will again team up in an effort to knock off another American tandem.

The two Ryder Cup stalwarts will partner for the Rest of the World team in the Day 1 foursomes (alternate shot) matches in the fourth-annual UBS Cup.

Langer and Montgomerie, who went 2-0-0 in last years UBS Cup and are 5-1-1 as a Ryder Cup duo, will face Americans Tom Kite and Raymond Floyd Friday morning on the Cassique Course.

They are the second match out. Team captains Arnold Palmer and Gary Player will set the pace, and then cheer on their players as the other matches wind down.

Palmer and Jay Haas ' both Wake Forest graduates ' will face Player and Mark McNulty at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Hale Irwin and Fred Funk will go against Sam Torrance and Barry Lane in Match 3. Course designer Tom Watson will team with Scott Hoch against past Masters champions Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle.

Curtis Strange and Craig Stadler will face European Senior Tour members Carl Mason and John Chillas. Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton and Fred Couples will take on Australians Peter Senior and Rodger Davis.

Good friends and rivals Palmer and Player needled one another in a light-hearted pairings announcement, which resembled golfs version of Whos on First?

Player had McNulty by his side in determining his pairings, while Palmer made solo decisions.

I dont like this collaboration, Palmer joked. Ive always had the advantage and now youve brought help in.

Responded Player: Since weve never won the damn thing, we need two assistants.

The U.S. won the first two editions of the UBS Cup and retained the Cup with a 12-12 tie last year.

The two sides will play six foursomes matches Friday, six four-ball (better ball) matches Saturday and 12 singles matches Sunday.

The U.S. can retain the Cup with another 12-12 tie, while the Rest of the World needs 12 points to win for the first time.
