NEC Has New Home in 2002

RSS

The WGC-NEC Invitational will be moving to Seattle, Wash., in 2002. Firestone Country Club has hosted the tournament since becoming a World Golf Championship event in 1999.

The Akron, OH venue also played host to the World Series of Golf from 1962-1998. The event became official on the PGA Tour in 1976.

Sahallee Country Club, site of the 1998 PGA Championship, will be the tournaments new home next year. However, PGA Tour commissioner Time Finchem said the event would return to Firestone in 2003 and possibly 2004.

We may leave once in a while to play somewhere else, but only because we think its important to move things around a touch, Finchem said. We view Akron very much as our home base. Its just a question of working out the details of what year.

Firestone wont be without in 2002. The club will host the Senior PGA Championship.
