Cink (65) shot the round of the day to move to +22. Chris Riley (71) is in third place at +21.
Overnight leader Lee Janzen struggled on Friday. He made one birdie and three bogeys to drop one point. Janzen (74) enters the weekend at +16.
Pernice, the 1999 Buick Open champion, started on the back nine. He made the turn in 1-under 35, but still managed to pick up 6 points, thanks to two birdies (two points each), one eagle (5 points) and three bogeys (minus one point each).
The 41-year-old then earned six more points by posting three birdies on the front nine.
Cink is riding a wave of confidence since narrowly missing a playoff in the U.S. Open. Despite missing a two-foot putt that might have put him in a Monday playoff with Mark Brooks and eventual champion Retief Goosen, Cink has taken all the positives from 71 holes of good golf.
How well I played the U.S. Open, thats still there with me; so Ive just got tons of confidence. I felt really good after that, Cink said.
Im remembering all of the great stuff that I did at the U.S. Open. I dont see any other way to look at it.
Cink was the benefactor of good luck on the first hole ' his 10th of the day ' Friday, when his tee ball headed towards out of bounds, only to hit a condominium and bounce back into the fairway.
He went on to birdie the hole, one of seven birdies on the day. Cink collected 14 points in the second round to move over the +20 plateau.
The last time I was at plus 20 was in Carnoustie (1999 British Open) after two rounds, joked Cink. But that was not a good plus 20. So it feels much better to be plus 20 here.
Lightning caused a suspension of play for nearly three hours on Thursday, forcing 42 players to complete their opening rounds early Friday. There were no weather delays on Friday.
The field was cut to the top 70 players and ties. After Saturday's third round, it will be cut again to the top 36 players and ties for Sunday's final round.
