I can certainly relate to what theyre going through, because I had a similar experience, Nick Price said Friday.
Prices former caddie, Jeff Squeeky Medlen, died of leukemia in June 1997. Medlen was on Prices bag for each of his three major victories in the 1990s.
I knew when Squeek got sick that he was going to die, Price said. And its very hard.
Thats the only person that was there next to you when you played great shots and did great things, he said of the player-caddie relationship. Sometimes you hit a shot out of the rough when youve got no chance and hit the thing two feet from the hole and you and your caddie talk about it 10 years later.
Its those things that you miss a lot, but also the companionship because a caddie and a player, its like a husband and a wife relationship. In fact, I probably spend more time with my caddie than I do with my wife.
Im just happy for Tom and Bruce that they played well and theyre enjoying more of that ' more of those moments together.
CHANGE IS GOOD?
Vijay Singh is one to tinker with success. He let go of his caddie of three years, Paul Tesori, in favor of his old bagman, Dave Renwick.
Renwick helped guide Singh to victory in the 1998 PGA Championship and 2000 Masters.
I just needed a change, although I was playing very well, Singh said. Ive had success in the majors with Dave, so bringing him back on the bag, I just thought would do me some good.
Renwick had been caddieing for Lee Westwood.
THIS SPACE FOR RENT
Robert Damron is at 3-under par, and four shots off the lead after rounds of 69-68. The 2001 Byron Nelson champion has gone through a terrible stretch of golf since his maiden tour victory.
He missed 15 of 28 cuts last year, and had cashed in only five times in 16 starts prior to this week. Consequently, Damron is currently seeking sponsors. He sported a solid black hat Friday, with no logo.
Name your price, you can have it, he said of the empty space on his lid.
Phil Mickelson has a long way to go, and plenty of birdies to make, in order to break his 0-for-43 drought in the majors. The same can be said for Mike Weir in his quest to win this years Grand Slam.
Both players are at even par through two rounds, seven off the lead.
I didnt make many birdies the first two days, Mickelson said. This is a course where youve got to make birdies; the leaders arent going to come back to you.
Mickelson is currently 11th on the PGA Tour in average birdies made per round, while Weir ranks fourth. The reigning Masters champion has made seven birdies thus far this week, Mickelson only five.
