Riegger on Track at the Honda

RSS

Sometimes you play so well, you dont want to stop. That was the case for John Riegger Friday at the Honda Classic.

Following a Day-1 postponement, Riegger recorded one eagle, 12 birdies and three bogeys over 33 holes. He established a new course record with a first-round 63, and then added a 69 to his card to enter the clubhouse at 12-under-par 132.

Riegger leads Paul Casey by two shots. The 24-year-old Englishman is at 10-under, 6-under on his round through 14 holes. 1988 Honda Classic champion Joey Sindelar is three back after a 67.

Darkness officially suspended play at 6:25 p.m. EST.

Only 50 players in the 142-man field have completed 36 holes of play; 24 have yet to start their second rounds. The second round is expected to be completed Saturday afternoon, with a cut to be made. The top 70 players and ties will then begin the third round.

Thanks to thunderstorms, Riegger was able to complete but three holes Thursday. It proved to be a blessing, as he woke up Friday morning and torched a receptive TPC at Heron Bay course.

The 39-year-old journeyman notched eight birdies over the remaining 15 holes of his opening round to vault to the top of the leaderboard. It marked the first time in his career that hes held possession of the lead after a round.

I didnt really look at the (score) board too much, Riegger said. Obviously, when I was playing the way I was, I didnt think anyone was playing much better.

Not long after signing his scorecard, he set out to mark up a new one.

Riegger birdied the first hole of his second round, only to make the turn in even-par 36. The back nine proved to be more adventurous. He birdied Nos. 10, 12 and 13, and bogeyed Nos. 15 and 17. In between those two dropped shots, Riegger rolled in an 18-foot eagle putt on the par-5 16th.

In his third full season on tour ' having finished tied for 12th in the Qualifying Tournament ' Riegger is still in search of his first top-10 finish, let alone his first victory.

He started the year in troublesome fashion, missing three cuts in four starts on the West Coast. However, he said hes much more comfortable on Bermuda greens, as opposed to the Poa annua.

On the West Coast, I hit the ball fine, just struggled with the putter, he said. I got down here, my strokes getting a flow to it. I see the lines very well, and making the putts.

Brad Faxon, who led the event when rain suspended play Thursday, is still at 7-under through three holes. World No. 2 Phil Mickelson also has 15 holes left in his second round. Hes at 3-under.

Last year, Ty Tryon became the second youngest player to make a cut on the PGA Tour at this event. This year, he may have the weekend off. Hes 1-over through 15 holes, with the projected cutline at 2-under-par 142.
