Short Game Key for Amiée at Corning

Editors Note: Dont miss 'Danielles Big Break! A Week on Tour.' This new 30-minute special, which will air Monday, May 30, as part of 'Your Game Night,' will follow The Big Break winner all week at the LPGA Corning Classic, getting exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at her preparations and performance.
04 LPGA Corning ClassicCORNING, N.Y. -- Annika Sorenstam walked off the practice range Wednesday afternoon at Corning Country Club. There was no hustle, no bustle. Even without a veil of security, fans didnt immediately flock to the game's No. 1 female player, asking for a snapshot or a signature.
Then Danielle Amie made her exit. Fans ' mostly guys ' asked for her autograph, asked her to pose for pictures. You would have thought she was the primary attraction this week at the LPGA Corning Classic.
And for some, she probably is.
Amie, winner of The Golf Channels Big Break III - Ladies Only! is using her second of two LPGA exemptions this week in New York. The 29-year-old Californian will be trying to improve upon her performance in her tour debut at the Michelob Ultra Open, where she shot 79-77 to miss the cut.
I think a great goal (this week) is to make the cut, she said. Coming out shooting Even, Even would be a great number. But that depends on how my putters rolling this week.
This best putter wins this week. These greens have a tremendous amount of break.
Amie has been working diligently on her short game since her last start three weeks ago. She knows that in addition to making putts she has to improve her wedge game in order to get past the first two rounds this time around.
Ive been practicing on my short game all week, she said. (Instructor) Dean Reinmuth has been working with me (on shots) 40 yards and in. The best part about the 40 yards and in, is that was my weakest spot. I would never lay up to that point and now Im praying I can get to that point. Im feeling really confident in my yardage and I hope to compete.
Amie said that she learned a lot in her maiden appearance on tour ' and more than just how to manage her game inside the ropes.
I have more of an understanding as to whats going to happen. I can set more of routine as to how I want my day to go, she said. The reaction of the fans, the supportiveness of the fans, the welcoming of the girls here ' its been great. This week I can go out, I can focus more on shot-for-shot rather than getting so many nerves involved.
The Corning course is a stark contrast to the par-71, 6,853-yard Kingsmill River Course. This par-72 layout snakes its way to only 6,062 yards.
Normally my game, Im used to long courses where I can really rip driver on every hole. This course is very short, tight, precise, she said.
Amie will also have to battle a lack of familiarity. The 'Big Break III' was contested at Kingsmill, so she had some local knowledge prior to teeing it up in that tournament.
This week, however, she was only able to get in one practice round at Corning, doing so Tuesday. Due to the tournament pro-am on Wednesday, she decided to go out to the Donald Ross-designed Mark Twain public course nearby and play 18 holes this morning, before clocking in a little time on the range and practice putting green on the host course in the afternoon.
I feel fairly comfortable right now,' she said, before adding, 'My swings a little tight. My timings not with me right now, but thats not to say it wont be there tomorrow. Im just trying to work things out.
Amie, who will be wearing a microphone to give fans an 'inside the ropes' experience, goes off on the 10th tee Thursday at 1:40 p.m. ET. Shell be playing alongside Laurel Kean and Janell Howland. Her second round will start on the first tee Friday morning at 8:20 a.m.
After two days of chilly, wet weather, Thursday's forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions with temperatures in the upper-60s; however, scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for Friday.
As for her final preparations, she said: Have a quiet night tonight and be ready for tomorrow.
The Golf Channel will air coverage of the LPGA Corning Classic beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. ET and continuing through Sunday. Each round also will replay in prime time from 9:30 ' 11:30 p.m. ET.
