Sutton Set to Defend in Greensboro

RSS

Coming off his first victory of the season, Hal Sutton will defend his title at the $3.5 million Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, NC.

Sutton overcame a two-shot final-round deficit to win last week's Shell Houston Open. It was his first victory at the TPC at The Woodlands after a pair of runner-up finishes in 1994 and '99.

No comeback was neccessary in Greensboro a year ago.

Sutton opened in rounds of 67-64 to take a five-shot lead into the weekend; and then held on for a three-shot victory over Andrew Magee.

Sutton played his final 36 holes in only 1-under-par, but it proved to be enough. He led Magee by one with four holes to play on Sunday. But at the 15th, Sutton nailed a 10-foot birdie putt, while Magee carded a bogey. That two-shot swing proved to be the difference.

Suttons win at the Forest Oaks Country Club came one month after he defeated Tiger Woods head-to-head at The Players Championship.

If yall think I deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph (with Woods), then I feel good about where my game is right now, said Sutton following his second title of the 2000 season.

Suttons back to defend in 01. Mark Calcavecchia, Jim Furyk and former champions Mark OMeara and Steve Elkington join him.

Elkington started a Greensboro trend that lasted throughout the 1990s.

In 90, he overcame a seven-shot final-round deficit to capture his first of ten career tour titles. The next year, Mark Brooks shot 64 on Sunday to erase a seven-shot deficit of his own.

Davis Love III fired a Sunday 62 to come from three back in 1992. In 93, Rocco Mediate turned the tables on Elkington, coming from four back to win in a playoff.

Jim Gallagher, Jr., also wiped out a seven-shot deficit en route to winning in 95. And Frank Nobilo and Trevor Dodds each collected their first tour wins by mounting Sunday charges in 97 and 98, respectively. Both men eventually prevailed in playoffs.

This is the 62nd playing of the event. Sam Snead won the inaugural tournament in 1938. It was the first of eight Greensboro victories in his career.

The last came in 1965. That win made Snead to oldest man at 52 years, 10 months and eight days to win on the PGA Tour.

In his 42-year PGA Tour career, Snead won 81 times ' more than any other player in history. His total career earnings were just over $620,000. This weeks winner will collect $630,000.
