Golf Channel Analyst Curt Byrum is in Birmingham, Alabama for coverage of the Regions Tradition. The strengths of the course at Shoal Creek are too numerous to count as this course has almost unanimous approval from the players. This Jack Nicklaus design is very tree lined and demands solid shots and the challenging greens demand great putting. There is a big reason why this course has also hosted two PGA Championships as well as the Regions Tradition.
Peter Senior, who lost in a playoff to Tom Lehman in the 2011 Regions Tradition, is someone to look at this week and Byrum is surprised that Senior has yet to win on the Champions Tour when you consider how talented he is and how successful he was around the world before turning 50.
Michael Allen, who has won twice on the 2012 Champions Tour and qualified for U.S. Open on Monday, is having an unbelievable year in pretty much every way but the best thing about his success is that he is accomplishing so much with such a great attitude. He is a guy who can drive it a long way and also perform well on the greens but also enjoy a glass of red wine and a cigar after the round. When you consider the fact that Michael Allen qualified for the U.S. Open which will be played on his home course, Allen likely comes to Shoal Creek on a high and he may be the player to beat.
