Dan Hicks - May 11, 2012

Golf Channel on NBC Host Dan Hicks will lead the weekend coverage of THE PLAYERS on NBC Sports alongside Johnny Miller. When asked about Tiger Woods’ struggles and what would happen if he missed the cut, Hicks said that that would be a huge deal because it involves someone who has the record for most consecutive cuts made on the PGA TOUR with 142. He has been talking a lot about progress but if Tiger misses the cut today, the talk will switch from progress to setback. And he will have to go under par today to make the cut.

He noted that when he is working with Johnny Miller on a broadcast, he is usually first wearing Crocs and then goes barefoot. He used to eat Oreos but now he eats cheese whiz during the show. Johnny is someone who lets you know what he thinks and he has a very interesting routine to become as relaxed as possible to get to a place where his commentary is as honest and relaxed as possible.

Hicks hosted the World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremony and he noted that Peter Alliss’ middle finger sendoff was certainly not part of the rehearsal. No one expected Alliss to do that and since the show was taped to air later, there was significant debate over what to do with the ending. Hicks felt that Golf Channel made the right decision to keep it in with a blur over the gesture. Dan Jenkins, Hollis Stacy, Sandy Lyle, and Phil Mickelson all made very special acceptance speeches and Hicks said that of all of the ceremonies that he has been involved with, this year’s ceremony was the most special.

Dan Hicks will be the host of coverage of THE PLAYERS on Golf Channel during the second round at 3:30PM ET.
