Dave Stockton - March 9, 2012

2-time PGA Champion Dave Stockton is and has been a putting teacher to some of the world’s best players including Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Michelle Wie, and Yani Tseng. About 10 months ago, he first began working with Rory McIlroy and had a tune-up with him prior to the WGC-Accenture Match Play. He is an easy student to work with and a really good listener. He likes to work on a lot of things by himself and in their tune-up, they spent about 5 and a half hours together and is a great student.

He does not have a specific method as every player is different. Phil Mickelson has his own way of putting his teachings into practice and Yani Tseng has her own way. He wants each player to have their own method of interpreting the lessons and as a result the students will be more comfortable in learning and executing those lessons.

Phil Mickelson is using a putter with different loft now which was a decision he made on his own. As a result, his forward press is not as pronounced and he is better able to read his putts. He is in perfect position when it comes to his putting right now and his final round at Pebble Beach is as good as he has ever seen Phil with his total game.

One of the most common bad habits that amateurs and pros alike have is not properly reading their putts. If you do not have any idea what you should do to prepare to get the ball rolling in the right direction, you are behind the 8-ball from the very beginning. He teaches the stroke 15 minutes into the lesson. Also, many players tend to put the ball too far back their stance and not come up on the ball enough.

At the upcoming Heroes Challenge, there will be a number of Medal of Honor recipients as well as the Golden Knights in attendance. Morgan Pressel will be among 13 pros in attendance and they are looking to raise between $600,000 and 700,000 for local charities.

There are certain tournaments that your wife will tell you to go to and the Toshiba Classic is one of those events. It is also located very close to where he lives and he is already practicing to get ready for the event. He truly enjoys what he is doing now with his teaching but if there could be one event per year to play it would be the Toshiba Classic.

He is very impressed with Rory McIlroy’s performance but he is more impressed with how accessible he is inside the ropes and how great he is with the fans and he would put Rory in the same class with Arnold Palmer in that respect. Because of how he is with everyone at the tournaments, Rory truly has the potential to be one of if not the main figure in the game of golf in the future.
