Morning Drive Co-Host Gary Williams is in Charlotte, North Carolina to play in the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am today with 2011 Wells Fargo Champion Lucas Glover. Gary hosted the Pairings Party for the Pro-Am and he said that the party is actually a draft to determine which pros will play with which amateurs. When the two-amateur team appears on the draft board that team has 45 seconds to pick a pro out of the group of pros without an amateur team. While Tiger Woods was the first pro to be picked, Rory McIlroy surprisingly went 4th.
Holly is also playing in the Pro-Am and there are some forward tees for her to play from. Gary was unsure how long the course will play from those tees but he thinks that it was a good idea for the tournament organizers to make arrangements so she would not have to play from tees that are too far back.
Gary has been involved with The First Tee of Charlotte for many years and was a part of a ceremony where Wells Fargo made a $100,000 donation to The First Tee. Players like J.J. Henry, Webb Simpson, and Johnson Wagner were also at the event and they read stories to the First Tee kids from rocking chairs.
As for predictions about how he will play during the Pro-Am, Gary said that he thought he could shoot “club-pro par” which means around 75 or 76. Gary thinks that the course is set up very well and he is playing well enough to where he feels confident that he can break 80.
