Jay Townsend - December 5, 2011

Everyone is always watching Tiger no matter how he is playing and no matter where anyone is around the world. When he saw Tiger play in the Australian Open, Jay felt that Tiger’s swing was as good as he had seen it in months and that he was on the cusp of winning again.

McIlroy and Westwood both won around the world (McIlroy in Hong Kong and Westwood in Sun City) and Jay feels that McIlroy’s was the most meaningful because it was a full-field event and shot a final round 65 to win after falling three shots back after 54 holes. It was a much-needed win and Rory had to win in order to have any chance to win the Race to Dubai. Jay is not a fan of limited field money grabs but he is not taking anything away from Westwood’s win.
It is going to be a big call for McIlroy to win in Dubai this week with Luke Donald in the field but if he does, it will be huge.

On the question of World Player of the Year, while he feels that Luke Donald is definitely the PGA TOUR Player of the Year, McIlroy would deserve the worldwide Player of the Year title if he were to win the Dubai World Championship and the Race to Dubai. While Donald’s worldwide performance has been incredible, McIlroy’s win in the U.S. Open would put Rory over the top.
