Jay Townsend - November 14, 2011

Townsend is in South Africa this week for the Alfred Dunhill Championship on the European Tour. He is staying in the largest game park in the world this week and is seeing all kinds of creatures before his very eyes.

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano has dealt with some demons on the greens but also he is coming back from a career-threatening back injury. He is one of the European Tour’s nice guys and is actually an ambassador for the Madrid Masters event. It is a wonderful thing to see him win again in such a world-class event with a great field that included many notable names among the over 200 players.

Martin Kaymer has decided not to take up PGA TOUR membership in 2012 and Jay feels that in terms of loyalty in a Ryder Cup year, Kaymer is making the right decision as he will be able to play pretty much as often as he wants in the U.S. with his exemptions into the Majors and WGC events as well as a few other U.S. events that he may want to play in.

He was in Singapore last week and the fact that Tiger was even playing tournament golf meant that he was being talked about. He felt that Tiger’s swing looked as good as it has in a very long time and while it may be too much to expect a strong Presidents Cup performance, he feels very optimistic that Tiger is close to being 100% back from a two-year long slump.
