The AT&T National is being played on a great course at Congressional CC but while the field is good, it is not great. Hawkins said that he spoke with a couple of players at Hartford about the question of the field strength at Tiger’s tournament and the impression that he got was that players need to take time off at some point and many players choose to take time off in the early summer. He does not think that the level of field strength has anything to do with players’ opinions of Tiger Woods.
Congressional Country Club is a very tough golf course and while the 2011 U.S. Open gave people the false impression that it was easy because Rory McIlroy was -16 for the week, it is definitely not true. Hawkins knows from personal experience that Congressional is a beast of a course especially when it is playing firm and fast. He thinks that it is very likely that the winning score this week will be in the single digits.
When asked about the 2013 World Golf Hall of Fame ballot, Hawkins said that the ballot is filled with many players with 12-13 wins and while there is a question about those players, he feels that Davis Love III with 20 wins is a contender and he also mentioned Mark O’Meara. O’Meara won 2 Majors among his 16 PGA TOUR wins and since he is over 50, Hawkins feels that he should get some serious consideration. However, he does not support the idea of inducting players who have yet to turn 50.
