John Hawkins - May 16, 2012

Tiger Woods announced that he was committing to six events including The Greenbrier Classic for the first time earlier this week. Hawkins was very surprised but very happy to hear that Tiger committed to The Greenbrier Classic and that he did so well in advance of tournament week. It was a great move by Tiger and Hawkins hopes that he does this more often. In his opinion, the early commitments show that Tiger is excited about playing tournaments and the advance notice gives tournament sponsors an opportunity to sell their event to fans as well as other corporate sponsors.

Matt Kuchar is the best American for about the next 10 minutes because of his win in THE PLAYERS. The question has been asked seemingly whenever an American wins on the PGA TOUR and if he were to give a real answer, he would say that Hunter Mahan narrowly holds that title because he is the only player to win twice on the 2012 PGA TOUR. The very existence of these discussions bodes well for the Ryder Cup later this year at Medinah.

When he thinks about Byron Nelson, Hawkins remembers how he went to the HP Byron Nelson Championship for many years and when Nelson was alive, the fields were very stellar. One year on a hot day during the Pro-Am, Byron and his wife sat by the 18th hole and were watching everyone finish their rounds. Every single pro stopped and shook Mr. Nelson’s hand and his mere presence was incredibly special to everyone at that tournament.
