Luke Donald won the Transitions Championship on Sunday and with that win returned to #1 in the Official World Golf Ranking after Rory McIlroy held the position for 2 weeks. He was more excited about getting the win than becoming World #1 again. Every week he wants to give himself a chance to win and he was able to do that. A lot of things happened on Sunday and a lot of players had a chance to win and he feels good that he was able to come out on top.
Two months ago, he began to think ahead to The Masters. As the first Major of the year, everyone is looking ahead to Augusta National and he set his schedule based on what he felt would be the best way to prepare for The Masters. He plans to spend a couple of days at Augusta National next week to practice.
Of all of the Majors in 2012, he feels that The Masters gives him the best chance to win because he is familiar with the course and because he has played well. He does not have nearly as much experience at The Olympic Club, Royal Lytham, or Kiawah Island. The Bear’s Club will have a green that is set up to Masters conditions and he plans to spend a lot of time there and he will also imagine certain shots when he is on the range in preparation for The Masters.
He won the Par 3 Contest in 2011 before finishing tied for 4th in The Masters and he is not sure if he will play in the Contest this year. Last year, he was focused on winning both the Par 3 Contest and The Masters but this year he may just focus on winning The Masters.
Having people mention the fact that he has not won a Major does not bother him because it is the truth. He is very proud of being World #1 and it has taken a lot of strong play to get to that point. McIlroy had it for a couple of weeks and it feels good to be #1 again. He joked that McIlroy is not old enough for full membership at The Bear’s Club before adding that McIlroy motivates him to be a better player and that it is great to have a friend like him on the PGA TOUR.
