Nick Flanagan - May 22, 2012

RSS

2003 U.S. Amateur Champion Nick Flanagan won the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Nationwide Tour last week. On the final hole in regulation on Sunday, he hit his second shot to the left of the 18th green but it bounced off of a cameraman to about 12 feet. He thought he had hit a great shot but he was relieved to learn that it got such a great bounce. He made the birdie putt and then went on to win in a playoff.

Since he had only conditional status on the Nationwide Tour this year, he was simply looking for chances to play but now that he has won, he is relieved and happy that he has the ability to set his own schedule and pick and choose the events that he wants to play in. With this past week being just his second start on the 2012 Nationwide Tour, he did not anticipate winning this quickly but it was certainly a welcome win.

There was a time in late 2009 when he was so frustrated with his game and his career that he actually considered quitting the game. While it was not a serious consideration, Flanagan certainly felt very discouraged that he was not performing to his potential on the PGA TOUR or the Nationwide Tour.

His roommate Jonas Blixt has been playing great on the PGA TOUR this year and with his third place finish in the HP Byron Nelson Championship, Flanagan joked that they could afford the rent this month. Flanagan played with Blixt in the first two rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship after Monday qualifying and he was very happy that the PGA TOUR put two roommates together.

For his win, he received a large winner’s check which he put into the back seat of his car. Flanagan took a picture of the check and then posted it to Twitter just for fun and now he has to actually find a place to put the check. It is currently in his garage.

He found out that he was going to be on Morning Drive late yesterday and he ended up going out with friends and staying up late. It has been amazing how many people have called and texted to say congratulations and he has really been enjoying this win.
