Notah Begay III - June 16, 2012

Golf Channel Analyst Notah Begay III is in San Francisco, CA this week for the 112th U.S. Open Championship. Begay III was a college teammate of both Tiger Woods and Casey Martin on the Men’s Golf team at Stanford University.

Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods are playing together in the 3rd round and in the past they have played a lot of competitive golf together in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. Furyk realizes that he does not have many opportunities left to win Major Championships and he has the game to perform well at The Olympic Club. Tiger has his own issues to deal with but he knows that Tiger understands that there will be a rock concert-like atmosphere and after a few holes, both Tiger and Furyk will probably have adjusted to the atmosphere and will go about their business of trying to win another U.S. Open title.

After playing a practice round together on Tuesday, Casey Martin said that he thinks Tiger Woods will soon return to the top better than ever. Begay III feels that a lot of Tiger’s future success will have to do with playing more tournaments and gaining more control and confidence with Sean Foley’s teachings. Tiger and Foley have a great relationship and he is still solidifying his relationship with caddie Joe LaCava. As his relationship with Foley has improved, Tiger has gotten more confident in his game and Begay III feels that when he becomes more comfortable with LaCava, his performance will continue to become more consistent.

We have not seen many comments in print or online criticizing The Olympic Club this week but he has heard some players on-site being critical of certain elements of the course. He feels that the USGA has done an incredible job of setting up and firm but fair golf course and agrees with the idea that the USGA is trying to re-establish par as the proper standard for U.S. Open success after Rory McIlroy won the 2011 U.S. Open with a score of -16.
