Paul Grogan - July 13, 2012

RSS

Paul Grogan is the GCSAA Course Superintendent for TPC Deere Run. Thousands of rounds are played at TPC Deere Run every year and making the transition from a public course to a PGA TOUR course can be very difficult especially when you are making the greens faster. The greens this week are at 11 or 12 on the stimpmeter but they have to wait until late in the preparations to increase the speeds because if the greens are that fast during daily play, rounds will take almost six hours and the course will not make much money during that time period.

The biggest challenge to the preparation of a course for a PGA TOUR event is wet conditions. Wet conditions are harder to control than dry conditions although the dry conditions this year have been especially brutal on the course. It has been a challenge to try to keep TPC Deere Run hydrated so the greens and the rest of the course do not burn out.

Since he is with the PGA TOUR, he is fortunate to be able to bring in people and resources from other TPC courses this week including TPC Sawgrass and he also has volunteers from a local college in the Silvis, Illinois area. Based on the weather and the preparation of the course, Grogan predicted that the winning score would be 22 under par and he predicted that Steve Stricker would win.
