GolfChannel.com Senior Writer Rex Hoggard is in San Francisco, CA for the 112th U.S. Open Championship. Hoggard was on Wednesday’s Grey Goose 19th Hole and one of the topics of conversation was Andy Zhang who earned his alternate status and later his spot in the field via the Sectional Qualifier in Lecanto, Florida. Hoggard was the reporter at that sectional during Golf’s Longest Day coverage on Golf Channel and he has learned a great deal about this incredible 14-year-old. He has a very technically sound swing and Zhang has just been taking it all in this week, even playing a practice round with Bubba Watson and Aaron Baddeley on Tuesday.
Coming to The Olympic Club at 4AM Pacific Time, there was already a long line of people waiting to get in to see the Tiger/Phil/Bubba group this morning. Many people know and understand how difficult it will be to follow that group today and tomorrow but nonetheless many people will follow them to try to get a glimpse of these three stars.
As part of a feature for GolfChannel.com, Hoggard walked the 17th hole with 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover. There was a lot of fog that day and neither he nor playing partner Davis Love III tried to hit the green in two. Even though it is a short par 5, Glover said that if the conditions were not right, he would not go for it in two no matter how short it was playing and added that anyone who wanted to win would agree with him.
