Golf Channel Reporter Steve Sands is in Surrey, England this week for the BMW PGA Championship. He co-hosted the European Tour Players’ Awards Dinner on Tuesday night and Sands said that it was a wonderful evening. It is a black-tie affair that gives the European Tour a chance to show how proud they are of their players and their various accomplishments over the past year. He is honored to be a part of this special event.
The BMW PGA Championship is comparable to THE PLAYERS in that they are both the flagship events of their respective tours and they are both played at the site of their respective tour’s headquarters. Many players on the European Tour feel that the BMW PGA Championship is the most prestigious event to win outside of the four Major Championships.
Many players have not been that excited about the various changes that have been made to Wentworth over the past few years. In response to criticism from players, the 18th hole has been softened significantly so that there will not be as many crazy bounces into the water as there have been over the past couple of years. However, the players are pleased to see a course that is in great shape this week.
Rory McIlroy is rested and ready to play and win the flagship event of the European Tour. While Rory has played incredibly well over the last year, recently he has struggled with a T40 finish in The Masters and a missed cut in his last start in THE PLAYERS. Sands has spoken to the World #1 this week and feels that Rory has put those events behind him and he is ready to bounce back with a strong performance.
