Mark Steinberg leads the golf division of Excel Sports Management and his clients include Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay, Danielle Kang, and Cheyenne Woods. He sat down with Win McMurry at the NB3 Challenge.
When it comes to Tiger Woods’ endorsements, he looks for associations with companies that have a global reach and appeal to multiple demographics. Rolex, EA Sports, Nike, and Fuse Science all reach different groups of people and appeal to different groups of people. Also, all of those companies represent various personal interests of Tiger Woods. For instance, his endorsement of and investment in Fuse Science is representative of his interests in fitness and health.
He gives 100% to whatever he does whether that is his family, Tiger Woods, or his other clients at Excel Sports Management. Tiger was supportive of his decision to leave IMG as well as the fact that Steinberg would be personally working with players other than him at Excel. People have asked him how many hours he works per week and he does not have an answer to that question because the amount of time he spends working depends on how much work he has. He is not the kind of person to stop working before he is finished.
When asked about Tiger’s appearance in Turkey later this year in October, Steinberg said that the event is being held this year to see where golf can go in Turkey. Having spoken to various Turkish government officials and organizers, he knows how excited they are about increasing their presence in the global game of golf. Both Tiger and Matt Kuchar are very excited to go there for the first time. Steinberg added that the scheduling was a bit difficult because Tiger has a great relationship with Frys.com. Tiger played in the Frys.com Open last year and the 2012 edition is scheduled opposite the match play event in Turkey. Tiger hopes to return to the Frys.com Open in the near future but he will not be there this year.
His life is not quite as glamorous as other agents or even fictional agents like Jerry Maguire. While he is certainly very busy, he does not walk around with five cell phones and he does not have the many ups and downs that, for instance, the fictional Jerry Maguire experienced in the movie.
