Morning Drive

Tiger Woods and Notah Begay III - August 29, 2012

14-time Major Champion Tiger Woods joined NB3 Challenge Tournament Host Notah Begay III on Morning Drive on Wednesday morning. Begay III said that the thing he is most proud of when it comes to the NB3 Challenge is how much the tournament has grown and evolved over the years. The tournament has become more fun and they have been fortunate enough to have some great players participate which attracts a lot of positive attention and money for some very important causes. His foundation is focused on making sure that their research into obesity is comprehensive and accurate so they can reach the most people and help them in an effective way. When Woods was asked about his busy schedule, he said that is very challenging because starting with the Open Championship, you have big event after big event and you want to win all of them. However, there is a big danger of burning yourself out and so you have to take advantage of every opportunity to rest in between tournaments and take a breath.

Tiger and Notah’s friendship started back when they were both very young kids playing in the Junior Worlds at Torrey Pines. Notah was nice enough to introduce himself and over the years they got to know each other when they would play against each other and sometimes with each other in tournaments. Tiger said that he considers Notah a big brother and he is very fortunate to have someone like Notah in his life. Tiger added that they will always be very close friends.

When asked about potential U.S. Captain’s Picks, Tiger said that yes he had talked to Davis Love III about it and that was all he would say about that issue. He was then asked about Notah’s TV career and Tiger said that Notah has done a great job as an analyst on Golf Channel’s Live From franchise and that Notah brings an intelligence and an objectivity to those shows that is very valuable.

Notah said that the European Ryder Cup team always seems to have an advantage over the U.S. in terms of the close relationships between its players. He is not sure why the European players seem to be closer than the U.S. players but chemistry is something that is very important to the success of any team. Love III is certainly aware of the importance of chemistry when it comes to his team and his Captain’s Picks will reflect that. Whether he picks Mahan, D. Johnson, Watney, or Fowler, chemistry will be one of the big factors.
