The HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship, co-sanctioned by the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia, features 156 players with 78 players from both tours.
This week is a homecoming for 18-year-old amateur phenomenon Danny Lee. Lee recently won the Johnnie Walker Classic, a tri-sanctioned PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour event, and will make his first appearance in his homeland since his win. Born in South Korea, Lee immigrated to New Zealand at age eight and is now a resident of Rotorua on the countrys North Island.
Playing on a sponsor invitation, he is the only amateur to ever receive an invitation to play in the HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship. Last August, he eclipsed Tiger Woods from the records books when he became the youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, NC.
American Darron Stiles won last years championship, which was shortened to 36-holes due to inclement weather.
