NBC Sports’ Inaugural Coverage of The Open, Golf’s Original Championship, Bolstered by Promotional and Production Plans Showcasing Events’ Prestigious Heritage, Iconic Atmosphere, and Historic Venues

The 145TH Open will be hosted at Royal Troon from July 14-17, and will mark NBC Sports Group’s first opportunity to showcase golf’s original championship, which dates back to 1860. As part of a new 13-year partnership with The R&A, NBC Sports and Golf Channel will provide all-encompassing live coverage from the first tee shot through the final putt, culminating with the Champion Golfer of the Year raising the Claret Jug.

Nearly 50 hours of live tournament coverage – the most ever planned for a major championship – will be surrounded by nearly 60 hours of Golf Channel’s comprehensive news coverage, highlighted by Golf Central Live From The Open. NBC Sports Group’s coverage also marks the return of The Open to U.S. broadcast television for the first time since 2009, and Golf Channel’s first-ever live tournament coverage of a men’s major championship.

NEXT PHASE OF NBC SPORTS’ PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN:

Since last year, NBC Sports has been promoting The Open and its debut on NBC and Golf Channel. As part of NBC Sports’ “Championship Season,” The Open has been positioned alongside some of NBC Sports’ most cherished properties, including The Players, Stanley Cup, Triple Crown races, French Open, Tour de France and NASCAR. Looking toward next week’s third men’s major of the season, NBC Sports’ next phase of promotion includes:

LIVE TOURNAMENT PRODUCTION NOTES:

Led by NBC Sports’ 30-time Emmy Award-winning producer Tommy Roy, and an Emmy Award-winning NBC Golf production team, coverage of The Open will deliver dedicated enhancements to complement one of the most experienced broadcast teams in golf, and feature two past Open Champions, Johnny Miller (1976) and Sir Nick Faldo (1987, 1990, 1992), as well as David Duval (2001) contributing to Golf Central Live From The Open, while also competing in this year’s event. In addition, veteran broadcaster Mike Tirico will be making his NBC Sports Group on-air debut at The Open next week as a tournament host, in addition to calling some live play-by-play coverage on Thursday and Friday.

“With our production team’s passion for golf, coupled with our on-air team’s vast knowledge and experience at The Open, NBC Sports’ coverage represents the opportunity to not only showcase the world’s best golfers competing on one of sports’ grandest stages, but also to offer viewers an inside look at the rich history of golf in Scotland through our compelling storytelling,” said Tommy Roy, coordinating producer, golf, for NBC Sports. “After numerous visits to Scotland and working in-tandem with our worldwide television partners, we have a robust plan to showcase to our viewers all of the elements that make The Open so uniquely special.”

Technology: NBC and Golf Channel will incorporate enhancements to help advance the storytelling captured by more than 140 cameras being utilized throughout the week, including:

  • NBC Links Trax – As players in the field attempt to navigate Troon’s course setup by employing the age-old links strategy of playing low, running shots up onto greens, NBC Sports has developed NBC Links Trax, which utilizes Hawk-Eye technology – widely associated with its presence in tennis coverage – by graphically highlighting where a ball lands and tracking its path and proximity to the hole.
  • Wind Indicators – Wind and rain account for as much influence at The Open as its historic host venues themselves. To help viewers track the impact wind can make on players’ decisions and shots, NBC Sports will implement an array of ultrasound wind indicators throughout the golf course. These devices will measure changes in wind conditions in real-time, providing immediate ultra-precise data so viewers can easily distinguish what a player is facing over any shot.
  • In addition to Pro-Tracer, X-Mo (super slow-mo), and a variety of specialty audio and visual production elements, cameras will be strategically positioned to ensure the highest-quality production. For example, at the famed “Postage Stamp” 8th hole, cameras will be embedded in all five pot bunkers, which offer defense to the often deceiving 123-yard, par-3.
  • Enhanced Graphics Package: Partnering with the R&A and Troika – an awarding-winning branding and marketing innovations agency – NBC Sports will display an authentic on-air look across both its U.S. coverage, as well as the international audience via The Open’s World Feed. The new, custom-built graphics package will incorporate iconic aspects of The Open, including the familiar yellow scoreboards, challenging weather conditions and Claret Jug.
  • If You’re Good Enough to Compete, You’re Good Enough for TV: NBC Sports has long believed that if a golfer is good enough to compete in a major championship, then coverage should make an effort to showcase that player over the course of the event. This philosophy is implemented by NBC Sports producer Tommy Roy and was successfully accomplished at The Players earlier this year. This commitment to trying to showcase the entire field provides NBC Sports the opportunity to share a wide-range of compelling stories, especially during the opening rounds, profiling the unique paths taken by world-class golfers and amateurs living out their dream as they tee it up at The Open.
  • Yanni’s “In Celebration of Man” Returns as NBC Sports’ Major Championship Theme Music: NBC Sports will present a new, customized rendition of Yanni’s “In Celebration of Man,” the longtime theme music associated with NBC Sports’ men’s major championship golf coverage. The new version interweaves distinct bagpipe notes – played by world-renowned musician Eric Rigler (Braveheart, Titanic) – within the composition to embody the Scottish heritage of The Open.
