A 20-year owner/operator of his family-run golf course outside of Indianapolis, PGA of America President Ted Bishop explains how his long tenure in the golf industry helped prepare him for his role as one of the game’s most influential voices on the next episode of In Play with Jimmy Roberts, airing Monday, Aug. 11 at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. In an interview with Golf Channel’s Matt Ginella, Bishop discusses his outspoken stance on some of golf’s biggest issues, shares personal insight on the business side of the game, and offers ideas for making the sport more inclusive to the non-traditional golfer.
Additional stories scheduled for Monday’s episode are:
The Villages: A one-of-a-kind active retirement community where golf carts are the preferred form of transportation (golf carts outnumber the amount of taxi cabs in New York City 5-to-1), The Villages is Florida’s largest retirement community and also is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation, according to the Census Bureau. With more than 100,000 residents spread out over three counties in Central Florida, The Villages community features 42 golf courses – including 32 9-hole executive courses and 10 Championship courses – and live entertainment 365 nights a year. Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner takes an in-depth look at the unique Central Florida destination.
Conversation in Cooperstown: Jimmy Roberts umpires a conversation from Cooperstown, N.Y., with first-ballot Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famers Johnny Bench (class of 1989), Mike Schmidt (class of 1995) and Tom Glavine, who was recently inducted as a member of the class of 2014. Topics discussed include baseball players’ infatuation with golf, with Schmidt and Bench’s attempts to take up golf professionally after their baseball days were over.
Will Robins: A former aspiring golf professional, Will Robins was on his honeymoon on Dec. 26, 2004, when he and his wife got caught in the catastrophic Thailand tsunami. Both survived, but due to injuries sustained that day, Robins was forced give up on his competitive playing career and later found peace in teaching the game to others.
Then and Now – Steve Scott: The Cinderella story of the 1996 U.S. Amateur, Steve Scott was on the verge of amateur golf history before meeting his ultimate fate, finishing runner-up to Tiger Woods. Scott looks back on the improbable story and talks about his continued career in golf, albeit on a different path.
Golf Detective:History meets mystery when In Play’s slightly defective “Golf Detective” Matty Blake sets out to learn more about the lost Ryder Cup of 1939.
