PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course is difficult, at least that’s what the world hears every spring during The Players Championship. And 125 PGA Tour professionals can’t be wrong.
But if the shell-shocked players coming off Sawgrass’ adjacent Valley Course on Tuesday are to be believed Pete Dye’s sister layout is truly sinister.
“It was a struggle out there today,” said Chris Scott, a member of the “Championship Flight” at the Golf Channel Am Tour’s National Championship, which means he has a handicap of 3.9 or less.
The normally demanding Valley Course was made even more demanding this week as Tour officials prepare the course to host the Nationwide Tour’s Jacksonville Open next month, the secondary circuit’s last full-field event of 2010.
“They better hit it straight,” Scott said. “Everything out there is like a clamshell and the rough must be 3 inches thick.”
