Par 5s key for Woods

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Much ado was made of Tiger Woods’ opening 68, his first sub-70 opening effort ever at the former Fruitland Nursery, but to hear the four-time green jacket holder his Day 2 70 was the stuff of champions.

“I was hitting the ball better and putting better today. Controlling my golf ball better tee to green today,” said Woods, who hit 12 of 18 greens, 11 of 14 fairways and needed 28 putts.

Woods is just three behind frontrunner Lee Westwood as Friday’s play crawled to a close, largely thanks to his play on the par 5s this week. He’s 8 under on the par 5s, including a pair of textbook birdies at the 13th and 15th holes on Friday. But unlike in previous years, it wasn’t all overpowering.

“I could reach (the 13th green in two shots), but not with that wind swirling,” he said. Instead, he laid up and rattled home his birdie putt. Singature Zach Woods stuff.
