PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Not long before a storm settled over TPC Sawgrass and temporarily stopped play at the Golf Channel Am Tour’s National Championship, Pittsburgh’s Jerry O’Brien stepped to the 16th tee of the Stadium Course to begin the layout’s dramatic final loop.
O’Brien was the first group off of No. 1 in the Jones Flight for handicaps 16 to 19.9 and was just behind the Championship Flight leaders, which drew a small crowd of spectators.
But if the lack of attention or the approaching storm was dampening O’Brien’s day it didn’t show, “This place is great,” he gushed.
We’re not sure how he fared on the island-green 17th hole, but chances are not even Pete Dye’s worst could ruin O’Brien’s day.
