PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Tiger Woods scrapped to within a half dozen of Lee Westwood, The Player’s midway pace setter, but finished his third round with back-to-back bogeys and appears certain to continue his pedestrian ways at TPC Sawgrass.
Woods is at 4 under par after his Saturday 71 and, without an enormous amount of help from those ahead of him, will extend his winless streak at The Players to nine years.
“I need a lot of help,” said Woods, who has just one top-10 finish (2009) since his lone victory at the “fifth major” in 2001. “I need a great round of golf (on Sunday) and help today and tomorrow.”
Despite his championship fortunes Woods said he is seeing progress in his swing this week. “I hit more good shots today than I did all week. It’s a process,” said Woods, who hit fewer greens and fairways than he did in Rounds 1 and 2 but needed just 27 putts.
