ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Largely lost in Tiger Woods’ first-round 67 at the Open Championship was a less-than-stellar putting performance.
Although the pedestrian performance is nothing new for the world No. 1, who has struggled with his putting this year, it is interesting because Woods put a new Nike putter in play this week, the first time he’s switched putters since 1999.
“As I said (the golf ball) comes off faster (with the new putter) and these greens are just the slowest I’ve ever seen in a long time, if ever,” said Woods, who needed 32 putts on Thursday. “It came off well and I putted pretty good today.”
Although not a ringing endorsement of the Old Course putting surfaces, compared to what he made of Pebble Beach’s greens, which he called “awful” during last month’s U.S. Open, St. Andrews got off lucky.
