Hooks Cuts from Royal Liverpool

  • I love when guys like Jiminez and Calc have to go to both knees trying to escape from a bunker that looks like a sand filled hot tub.

  • I hate the fact that there seem to be fewer ice cubes in this country than television options.

  • I understand why Tiger hates the criticism of his golf swing. He won six times last year, twice this season, and is well on his way to being the greatest player ever. Nick Faldo, like any analyst, is most effective when honest and critical, but that doesnt mean Tiger has to like it. Borrowing from Robert Phillip writing in the Daily Telegraph, way back in 1992, when Peter Alliss offered the opinion that David Leadbetters pupil had become bogged down in theory, Faldo snapped back: Well, hes an expert, isnt he? If youre qualified to climb 30 steps to a commentary box, it seems to make you an expert on other peoples games. Faldo was once the best in the game. He understands exactly how Tiger feels. Of course, Tiger will make bad swings. Hes a golfer, a fact that so few seem accept so high is the standard hes set for himself.

  • I think Euro fashion maven J. Lindeberghs made as big an impact on the sport as Tiger.

  • I spoke with Chris DiMarcos dad, Rich, before he made the trip to Liverpool with his son. Hes a big hearted man who suffered the cruelest blow when his wife of more than 40 years, Norma, died of a sudden heart attack earlier this month. He explained that he felt lost, but that hed travel with Chris, together re-discovering the joy in a world they always shared with Norma. If Chris goes on to win, the tears run over the claret jug all the way to the Irish Sea.

  • I read that former Walker Cup captain Peter McEvoy thought Graeme McDowell would win a major before Luke Donald and Paul Casey.

  • I know the R&A and the members at old Royal Liverpool are tickled at the overwhelmingly positive player reviews of their golf course after Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called it a thing of the past and visually disappointing.

  • I couldnt believe the aerial shots of the 10th. It was almost completely brown, like the Sahara.

  • I find it fascinating that - unlike basketball or football - in golf the dimensions and the look and the feel of this sports fields of play are always changing. Augustas different than Winged Foot which is different than Liverpool.

  • I miss the 500 channel American television universe. Our hotel features five stations. I watched The Golden Girls in German last night.
