More Hooks Cuts from Torrey

2008 U.S. OpenSAN DIEGO -- Some more Hooks and Cuts from Torrey Pines:
  • Whatd you think when he made the eagle at 13? That Jordan and Ruth and Gretzky were all timers, but not even they did stuff like this?
  • Lee Westwoods a cool customer with a dry British wit. Hes been building to this moment for a few years. Once number four in the world, he fell outside the top 200 until fighting back towards the upper echelon. Westwoods been very steady all week. Id be mildly surprised were he to win today, but not shocked.
  • Phil Mickelson faces a tough walk spoiled this afternoon. The quad at 13 made his Torrey homecoming not just disappointing, but embarrassing. He may want to re-think his major championship preparation. Why turn simple algebra into advanced calculus?
  • Roccos good buddies are guys named Sticky and Murph. He looks at the galleries and smiles when they scream his name. He enjoyed stogies and wore shorts in the U.S. Open qualifier in Columbus, where he survived an 11 man playoff. Smoke em if you got em gentlemen.
  • Good week so far for some good young American players hoping to catch Paul Azingers attention. D.J. Trahan and Hunter Mahan begin the day five back.
  • If the executives at Advil are on their game, they cut a deal with Tiger immediately.
  • In GolfWorlds U.S. Open preview special, I was part of a panel rating the Top 10 U.S. Opens of all time. I picked Tigers runaway at Pebble as number one because it was the finest hour for the man I believe is the finest player in history. Other Opens on various lists included Ouimet in 1913, Hogan in 1950, Jones in 1930, Palmer in 1960, Jack in 1962, Watson in 1982 and Trevino in 1971, among others. Were one good day away here at Torrey from having to give serious consideration to putting the 2008 U.S. Open on the list.
  • Whatd you think when Tiger chipped in at 17? You yelled and screamed and said it cant be done, its just not possible, didnt you?
  • The 63 at Southern Hills last August, the Match Play comeback against J.B. Holmes and the game winner at Bay Hill werent that long ago. But Tiger makes them old news. In fact, the eagle at 13 and the chip-in at 17 were old news by the time he stepped up the plate at 18. New day, new hole and time after unbelievable time he absolutely boggles your mind.
  • Sunday wish list: a Sergio charge, a couple eagles at the now drivable 14th, Rocco in the mix, a move from Ernie, heroics from someone not named Tiger and more of the usual fall-out-of-your chair theatrics from you know who.
  • I dont know if hell win today. But I do know this. Tiger will be famous for 500 years.
