Stock watch: Buying McDowell, selling Daly

RSS

Each week on GolfChannel.com, we’ll examine which players’ stocks and trends are rising and falling in the world of golf.

BUY

G-Mac: Description: Loves links golf, playing in the wind and grinding. Desperately wants to capture the year’s third major. Has won three of his last eight worldwide starts. Meet Graeme McDowell, the 2013 Open favorite.

Pace of play: Finally, a cure to the slow-play epidemic! Just give Tour players an incentive and a deadline. A final group that finishes in 3 hours, 38 minutes gives me more hope than any of the USGA’s cheesy ads.

Out-of-nowhere winners: Greenbrier champ Jonas Blixt, who had no top 10s in 16 previous starts this season, falls somewhere between John Merrick and Michael Thompson, though still not quite in Derek Ernst territory.

Open Championship: Forgive the giddiness, but it’s this scribe’s first time covering the British Open. Anyone own an extra pair of wellies?

SELL

Greenbrier: The Jim Justice Show may be like sleepover camp for millionaires, but there were only 12 of the top 50 players in the world in West Virginia and Sunday’s weak leaderboard likely resulted in some serious channel-surfing.

John Daly: This week’s elbow surgery will extend Long John’s years-long stretch of irrelevance.

Criticism: We get it – Rory is having a forgettable season in what was always going to be a transitional year. But discussions of our sport needn’t always pander to the lowest common denominator.

Castle Stuart: The images there are stunning, but many Tour types seem eager to bid adieu to the Scottish Open venue. Hello, Royal Aberdeen.
