Alfredsson Named European Solheim Cup Captain

Halmstad, Sweden -- The Ladies European Tour on Thursday named Helen Alfredsson captain for the 2007 European Solheim Cup team.
Alfredsson is the third Swedish woman to be named captain after Catrin Nilsmark (2003, 2005) and Pia Nilsson (1998). She will lead the European Team against the United States in her home country from September 14-16, 2007.
'To be the European captain at home, back in my own country and so close to where I grew up, really is an overwhelming feeling,' said Alfredsson, who has amassed a 10-12-2 personal record in seven Solheim Cup appearances.
'I have so many great memories from The Solheim Cup and to be chosen is such a great honor,' she added.
Alfredsson, 40, last appeared in the 2002 Solheim Cup in Minnesota, where she posted a 1-2 record that included a singles loss to Emilee Klein. The U.S. won the 2005 event at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
A five-time winner on the LPGA Tour and 11-time Ladies European Tour champion, Alfredsson led the PING European Junior Solheim Team to victory at Crooked Stick in 2003.
Her victories on the LPGA Tour include a win at the 1993 Kraft Nabisco Championship -- a women's major -- and, most recently, a victory at the 2003 Longs Drugs Challenge.
'Helen has all the credentials we were looking for in a captain,' said Karen Lunn, chairman of The Ladies European Tour and The European Solheim Cup Committee.
'She has been a great supporter of the Ladies European Tour over the years and is a life member. She is also extremely passionate about The Solheim Cup. She has played in seven Solheim Cups and is a great motivator and a team player.'
Alfredsson won the European Order of Merit title in 1998 and finished 67th on the LPGA Tour money list in 2005.
