Bjorn Birdies 72nd for Irish Open Victory


2006 Nissan Irish OpenMAYNOOTH, Ireland -- Thomas Bjorn birdied the 72nd hole Monday to win the Nissan Irish Open. Bjorn closed with an even-par 72 to end at 5-under-par 283.
Paul Casey birdied No. 15 on Monday, but parred his last three holes to take second place at minus-4 after a final-round, 1-over 73.
Darren Clarke, who led when action resumed Monday morning, bogeyed two of the last three holes to close a round of 73 that left him at 3-under-par 285. Peter Hedblom had a brief share of the lead, but bogeyed his final two holes to finish in fourth at minus-2 after a 2-over 74.
The tournament was plagued by weather issues causing the Monday finish. Strong winds on Thursday caused a lengthy delay. The tournament had caught up Saturday as the opening three rounds were completed that day, but heavy rain and wind halted action early on Sunday.
Just three players had completed their final rounds on Sunday. The remainder of the field returned to The Montgomerie Course at Carton House Golf Club to finish the final round early Monday before more bad weather was set to blow in.
