Henderson, Nev. -- John Daly defeated his opponent 5 & 4, while Lee Trevino lost by the same margin on Monday in the first-ever Best Western People vs. the Pros at Lake Las Vegas.

Daly won four of the first five holes and was 6-up through nine holes against Andy Chao, a six-handicapper from San Diego, CA. Chao tried to rally as he won the 13th hole, but after his drive found the rocks near the 14th green, defeat was imminent. He conceded the match after struggling with three shots and a penalty stroke in the rocks.

Daly picked up a check for $100,000, while Chao earned $50,000 in defeat. Daly has a busy schedule thanks to this event. He played at The Memorial this past weekend, and flew to Nevada afterwards. He now has to fly back across the country for a 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier on Tuesday. He participates in a charity event Wednesday before teeing it up at the FBR Capital Open on Thursday.

Trevino, meanwhile, had his hands full with 50-year-old Andy Rineer, a 10- handicapper from Las Vegas, NV. After making the turn, Rineer headed for the house with a 3-up advantage. He then won the 11th and 12th.

After the 13th was halved, Trevino was 5-down with five to go. The two men halved the 14th and Rineer claimed a 5 & 4 win and $100,000 for the victory. Trevino pocketed $50,000 in the loss.

The event was a head-to-head stroke-play event with the amateurs getting their full handicap strokes. The two men emerged from a qualifier of approximately 200 competitors.
