Defending Champ Falls in Third Round


LOS ANGELES -- Defending champion Kemp Richardson was defeated Tuesday in third-round action of the 50th USGA Senior Amateur at Bel-Air Country Club.
Jack Vardaman easily handled Richardson, 4 and 3, to earn a quarterfinal matchup against Greg Reynolds on Wednesday. Reynolds also had an easy time in the third round, defeating Steven Hakes, 7 and 6.
Martin West and Mark Bemowski won their third-round matches to earn a quarterfinal berth against each other. West ousted Edward Fletcher, 2 and 1, while Bemowski beat Tony Lehman, 4 and 2.
Ted Lyford, Alan Foster, Greg Shaw and Michael Walters were also winners. Lyford downed Stephen Yavorsky, 1-up, while Foster beat Kent Christopher, 4 and 2, to setup Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup. Shaw defeated Ernie Newton, 5 and 3, setting up a meeting with Walters, who beat Alex Tarumianz, 5 and 4.
Wednesday will see quarterfinal and semifinal round action.
The Senior Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
