Girls Jr Medalist into Quarterfinals

USGACHARLOTTE, NC -- Mina Harigae easily moved into the quarterfinals with a 5-and-4 win over Sara Hurwitch in Thursday's third round action at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at Carmel Country Club.
Harigae moved on to face Stephanie Kono, who needed 19 holes to beat Cydney Clanton. Vicky Hurst was a 2 and 1 winner over Jane Rah in the third round. Hurst will take on Tanya Wadhwa in the quarterfinals after Wadhwa bested Isabelle Lendl, 1-up.
Alexandra Bodeman advanced to face Ellen Mueller in Friday's quarterfinals. Bodeman took down Kate Scarpetta, 3 and 2, while Mueller was a 2 and 1 victor over Ester Choe.
The last quarterfinal match will pit Jenny Shin against Michelle Shin. Each was a 1-up winner in the third round -- Jenny over Lindy Duncan and Michelle over Sally Watson.
Only four of the 16 second-round matches were completed on Wednesday before thunderstorms ended action for the day. That caused a change in schedule as the second and third rounds were completed Thursday. Friday will now have both the quarterfinals and semifinals before Saturday's 36-hole final.
Harigae, the stroke-play medalist, won four of six holes from the second. Three of her wins came on Hurwitch bogeys.
The 16-year-old Harigae, who lost in the quarterfinals at the Women's Amateur Public Links Championship earlier this year, birdied the ninth to take a 5-up lead. The pair halved the next five holes as Harigae took the match 5 and 4.
Kono trailed for just one hole in her match with Clanton. The Hawaiian birdied the fifth to even the match. She claimed the ninth and 14th holes, but Clanton fought back with wins on 11 and 16 to even the match. After the pair parred 17 and 18, Kono claimed the match with a birdie on the 19th hole.
Hurst took control of her match by winning three of four holes from the sixth, two on birdies. Wadhwa led by as many as 2-up twice against Lendl, but Lendl evened the match with a birdie on the par-5 16th, though a bogey at the last cost her the match.
Scarpetta birdied the 14th to get within 1-down, but she double-bogeyed the 15th and a bogey on 16 allowed Bodeman to move into the quarterfinals.
Mueller birdied the third to go 1-up, but Choe birdied six and seven to turn a 1-down deficit into a 1-up lead. However, Mueller birdied No. 8 to even the match and never trailed again. Mueller won three of the first four holes on the back nine, before closing out Choe when they halved 17 with pars.
Jenny Shin led by as many as 4-up through 10 holes. Duncan fought back with birdies on 14 and 16. Shin's lead dropped to 1-up when she bogeyed the 17th, but she won the match as they halved 18 with pars.
Michelle Shin also never trailed. She won the fourth and sixth to grab a 1-up lead. However, Shin bogeyed 14 and double-bogeyed 15 as her lead disappeared. Watson faltered to a bogey at the last to give Shin the 1-up win.
