Goggin Grabs Midway Lead

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Mathew Goggin fired an 8-under 64 Friday to grab a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Chattanooga Classic. Goggin stands at 14-under-par 130.
Jerry Smith also carded a 64 to move into second place at minus-13.
Virginia Beach Open winner Troy Matteson also fired a 64. He stands in a tie for third place at 11-under-par 133 where he was joined by David Morland IV, James Nitties, Jason Schultz, Johnson Wagner, Willie Wood and David Branshaw.
Both the first and second rounds were completed Friday after the first round was suspended on Thursday due to inclement weather.
Goggin got off to a quick start with birdies at the second and fourth to move to minus-8. He converted back-to-back birdies from the eighth at the Black Creek Club.
The two-time winner on the Nationwide Tour moved to 11 under with a birdie on the 11th. Goggin then birdied the 14th for the second straight round. The 30-year-old sank a 3-foot eagle putt on the par-5 closing hole to take the halfway lead.
'The 36-hole lead is kind of insignificant because you've got to go out and shoot another 14 or 15 under on the weekend,' said Goggin. 'It's a bit relentless really, having to make so many birdies, but that's what you have to do. You can go out and play average and shoot 8 or 9 under if you start rolling in some putts.'
Smith reeled off four straight birdies from the par-3 third to jump to minus-9. After parring six consecutive holes around the turn, the 41-year-old dropped in birdies on 13 and 14.
The Iowa native closed with birdies on 17 and 18 to take second place.
'It's going to take a couple days very similar to the first two,' said Smith. 'You know going out that the scoring is very good and you just have to jump on the same train and go along with the guys. But, I've never been one to shoot a lot of 63s or 64s.'
Jeff Freeman, Esteban Toledo and Grant Waite share 10th place at 10-under-par 134.
Martin Laird, Casey Wittenberg and Todd Demsey are one stroke further back at minus-9.
