USGA 74x32MAPLE GROVE, MN -- Danny Green of Jackson, Tennessee played a flawless round of nine-under 63 to take a one-shot lead after the first-round of stroke-play at the 79th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

Green, the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur winner, set a new championship record by making seven birdies and one eagle at Rush Creek Golf Club. Playing in his 12th Public Links, Green tied the championship record by shooting a six-under- par 30 in his first nine holes. In addition, Green's nine-under-par total for 18 tied the USGA wide mark with Chris Mundorf's 63 in the second round of stroke play at the 2001 U.S. Amateur.

'Pretty good for an old man,' said Green, the second-oldest player in the field at 47. 'I hit every fairway and every green, which doesn't hurt. I'm in the books again but I'd just as soon be the last man standing, though. They can have all the 63s.'

Chris Stroud from Groves, Texas is just one shot back of Green. Stroud opened with a birdie on the first and produced four consecutive birdies from holes 9-12. Despite a bogey on 15, Stroud birdied the last for an eight-under 64. The junior from Lamar University, was named to the Ping All-America first team.

A trio of players stand just two shots back, headed by 2002 champion Ryan Moore. Last year's runner-up Dayton Rose opened with a three-under 69.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
