Haas, a 2002 semifinalist, defeated Jesse Mudd, 7 and 5, at the famed Oakmont Country Club, while Kuehne outlasted Ty Harris, 2-up. Both Haas and Kuehne are members of the USA Walker Cup team.
Meanwhile, stroke play medalist John Holmes cruised into the second round after eliminating Rick Reinsburg, 6 and 4. Holmes secured the top seed with a 2-under par 68 on Tuesday at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
Other notable winners on Wednesday included Brock Mackenzie, Adam Rubinson, Casey Wittenberg and Tom Glissmeyer. Mackenzie, Rubinson and Wittenburg are also members of the USA Walker Cup team, while the 16-year-old Glissmeyer is the youngest remaining player in the field. Glissmeyer was also the youngest player at the 2003 U.S. Open.
USGA champions Brandt Snedeker and Ryan Moore were eliminated. Snedeker was the 2003 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, while Moore was the 2002 Public Links winner.
There was a 14-man playoff conducted prior to start of Match Play to determine the final 12 berths in the field of 64 players.
Action continues on Thursday with the second and third rounds of Match Play and concludes with Sundays 36-hole final.
The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, with 10 of the events strictly for amateurs.
