Hughes Wins Wichita Playoff

WICHITA, Kan.-- Bradley Hughes birdied the first hole of a playoff on Sunday to capture the Wichita Open for his first career victory on the Nationwide Tour.

'I played with a good feeling all day today,' said Hughes. 'I've been playing well all year and knew it was just a matter of time before I won.'

Hughes used an eagle at the last in regulation to complete a round of 65 and join Hunter Haas, Erik Compton and Scott Harrington in a tie for first at 14-under-par 270.

Back on the par-5 18th to begin the playoff, Hughes split the fairway off the tee and left his second shot in the rough in front of the putting surface. Hughes then chipped his third within 3 feet of the hole.

Compton, Haas and Harrington all found the green in three but none of them were able to convert for birdie. Hughes then drained his short birdie try for the win.

Hughes was tied for 16th to start the day at Crestview Country Club and made an early run with a birdie at the par-5 second and a remarkable eagle at the par-4 third.

The Australian bogeyed the par-3 fifth and coasted with eight straight pars before picking up a birdie at the 14th. Hughes followed that up with a birdie at the very next hole and closed with an eagle at the 18th to join the playoff.

Haas vaulted out of the gate on Sunday with birdies on each of his first four holes. He added a birdie at the eighth and picked up another birdie at the 14th to complete a 65 of his own.

'I should have worked on my putting and not on the practice range,' said Haas, who won the Knoxville Open in a playoff in June. 'I three-putted No. 18 twice today. But I will learn from it. It was good having the opportunity to win again and I'm proud of that.'

Harrington also fired a 65 to earn a spot in the extra session.

Compton birdied each of his last two holes to complete a round of 68.

Brad Elder, who held a three-shot lead heading into the final round, struggled to a 72 to join Dave Christensen in a tie for fifth at 13-under-par 271.
