Klauk began on the back nine Thursday and waited until his third hole to record his first birdie. He closed his opening nine with four birdies in his last five holes.
Klauk parred his first three holes on his second nine, but caught fire once again. He birdied three in a row from the fourth and parred his last three for the first-round lead.
Klauk won once on the Nationwide Tour and that came at the 2003 Wichita Open. This year he ranks 12th on the money list thanks to a tie for second at the Panama Championship and a tie for fourth at the Henrico County Open.
Bryan DeCorso, Scott Gutschewski, David Hearn and J.J. Killeen share fifth place at 4-under 68.
Scott Parel, Brad Weesner, Chris Parra, Jon Turcott, Kris Blanks, Gabriel Hjertstedt and Nick Malinowski are knotted in ninth place at 3-under-par 69.
Defending champion Paul Claxton shot a 1-over 73 and is part of a group tied for 49th place.
