Kraft Hangs On for NE Pennsylvania Title

2005 Northeast Pennsylvania ClassicMOOSIC, P.a. -- Greg Kraft needed almost all of his huge third-round lead on Sunday. He shot a 1-under 70 to win by two strokes at 17-under-par 267 at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic at Glenmaura National Golf Club.
'It's a lot easier to chase than it is to protect. The mindset is to be aggressive, keep pushing yourself,' said Kraft, who established a new Nationwide Tour record with his seven-shot, 54-hole lead. 'I decided today that anything with risk-reward trouble, I was not going to go for the pins. If there are penalties and doubles, I didn't want to give up a big chunk of it at once.'
Tim O'Neal shot a 6-under 65 and finished in second at 15-under-par 269. Bubba Watson posted a 5-under-par 66 on Sunday and took third place at minus-14.
Kraft collected a pair of birdies in his first five holes, but O'Neal birdied five of his first six to cut the margin to four. O'Neal birdied the ninth and Kraft bogeyed the same hole, so now the cushion was only two.
'I felt somebody would cut into the lead. I knew someone would get hot,' said Kraft, who earned $81,000. 'I figured getting hot would be about 3 under. With the tough pins and all, I was under-par. I didn't figure I had increased my lead, but I didn't think it would go to two!'
O'Neal only managed one more birdie the rest of the way. Kraft birdied the par-5 10th to increase the lead to three, but a bogey on 16 dropped the edge to two.
Kraft parred out to polish off his first win since the 1993 Deposit Guaranty Classic on the PGA Tour.
'This is wonderful,' said Kraft, who collected $27,000 more for this win than the PGA Tour victory 12 years ago. 'I guess in '93 I expected to win and it didn't feel as good as this one.'
Rich Barcelo shot a 4-under 67 and took sixth at 11-under-par 273. Doug Garwood carded a 3-under 68 and finished alone in seventh place at minus-10.
Troy Matteson (67), Ryan Armour (68) and Brandt Snedeker (70) tied for eighth place at 9-under-par 275.
