Locals Schneiter Clegg Share Lead in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Steve Schneiter and Garrett Clegg each fired rounds of 7-under-par 65 to take the lead after one round of the Envirocare Utah Classic. The two leaders are both local players that have played Willow Creek Country Club several hundred times between them.
Jody Bellflower, who has missed 10 of 16 cuts entering this event, stands alone in third place at 6-under-par 66.
Justin Bolli, a winner at the Chattanooga Classic earlier this year, paces a group of players at minus-5. He is joined there by Ryan Hietala, Kenny Knox, David McKenzie, Jake Reeves, Todd Rose, Brett Wetterich, Jeff Freeman, Robert Garrigus and Nathan Green.
Schneiter, who was in the final group of the early tee times, started on the 10th tee. He opened with three pars before picking up a birdie at the par-4 13th and came right back to birdie the 15th.
He then ran off five consecutive birdies around the turn from the 17th to jump to minus-7. Schneiter birdied the par-three fifth at Willow Creek to get to 8-under.
However, he tripped to a bogey at the par-4 eighth before parring the ninth to match his career-best score on the Nationwide Tour.
Schneiter has played at least one event on the Nationwide Tour every year since 1990, with his best finish a tie for ninth at the 1996 Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic.
'It definitely helped to have played here so much,' said Schneiter, who is a member at Willow Creek. 'You have to know where to miss it. You can play from in front of the greens, but you can't play it from over the green. You never want to short-side yourself out here because it's pretty much bogey.'
Clegg, a recent graduate of the University of Utah, also started on the back nine. He dropped in birdies at the 11th and 13th to open his round. He converted back-to-back birdies from the 17th to head to the front nine at minus-4.
He collected three birdies over a four-hole stretch from the third to jump to minus-7. Clegg stumbled to a bogey at the eighth, but came right back to birdie the ninth for a share of the overnight lead.
'I'm surprised to shoot only 2-under on the par-5s because they are all there for the taking,' Clegg said. 'I've been playing good lately and putting well. Today I made a lot of putts.'
Kevin Stadler, a two-time winner this season, opened with a 4-under-par 68. He is joined there by Ryan Howison, Jason Caron, Rick Price, Warren Schutte and John Elliott.
Jimmy Walker and D.A. Points, both two-time winners this season, pace a group of 16 players at minus-3. Also in that group are David Hearn and Hunter Haas, who have also won this year.
